In spring monitoring of migratory birds and bird surveys, amateurs play a major role. Today’s live migratory bird programme on TV and radio also visits Liminganlahti.
A large part of the observations made by amateurs will be compiled into a database on the TIIRA observation pages of Suomen Bird Life. The sites provide information on the locations and numbers of both rare and more general bird species.
The Liminga Bay wetland, which is exceptional in Finland and Europe, is an important centre for wader monitoring in particular.
– I usually also try to count the species and put the data into Tiira, because it helps to see changes in the local bird population and to link these local observations to larger trends in the bird population,” says Iikka Kivi.
Spring and autumn are the golden times for bird watchers, when you can follow the journey of migratory birds between north and south in Liminganlahti and the Pärämere coast.
As the weather warms up, insect eaters also begin to arrive in the area, which are already abundant among waterfowl and waders. During this week, barn swallows have been seen there, among other things.
