Warm weather makes the waters move: Higher than average floods are predicted in Kainuu

There is still snow and ice at Hiukka’s beach in Sotkamo. Photo taken on Monday.

The snow is still quite unmelted and that affects the amount of melt water.

Higher than average floods are predicted for the Kainuu area. The warm weather in recent days causes the water levels of rivers and natural lakes to rise in the area that extends from Kainuu to northernmost Lapland.

The spring floods are expected to be higher than average because the snow has still not melted much.

According to the Finnish Environment Agency, the water value of the snow is in some places up to 100 millimeters higher than the average level at the beginning of May in the areas above Lake Oulu, because a lot more snow has fallen in the last couple of weeks. In the lower reaches of Oulujoki, the water value of the snow is closer to the typical value of the time.
