The Ely Center granted half a million to expel geese from the fields of North Karelia – most of the projects remained unfunded

The migration of white-cheeked geese is expected to accelerate as spring progresses.

The ely center of North Karelia has granted funding to four white-cheeked geese deportation projects in North Karelia. In total, money was granted equal to the amount allocated by the Ministry of the Environment, i.e. around 458,000 euros.

Funding was received by the Tutjunniemi batch, the Kaatamo batch and the Taipalee batch operating in Liperi, as well as the Värtsilä gamemen operating in Tohmajärvi.

The expulsion measures will cover nearly 5,000 arable hectares and their goal is to reduce or prevent crop damage caused by white-cheeked geese.

Almost three million were paid in compensation

There were a total of 25 applications. According to the Ely Center, the projects financed are the best in terms of effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and feasibility.

The cold has slowed down the white-cheeked geese migration, but it is expected to speed up as early as next week.

White-cheeked geese cause significant damage to crops. Last year, the ely center paid 2.8 million euros in compensation to North Karelia for damages caused by protected animals, mainly white-cheeked geese.
