Anyone can make jazz? This is the question that the Puoli sättam editor set out to find out with the help of an enthusiastic musician, 1.5-year-old Vilho.
We asked Iiro Rantala, one of Finland’s most famous jazz musicians, about it.
– This is a typical situation where you try to dress up something that you don’t understand as jazz. I’ve come across it often, Rantala laughs.
A day for jazz
In 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO designated the last day of April as International Jazz Day. Jazz as an art form is thus officially recognized as a promoter of peace, intercultural dialogue, diversity and respect for human rights and dignity. The Finnish Jazz Association challenges Finns to take part in UNESCO’s International Jazz Day celebrations, instructions can be found on the Jazz Association’s website (http://www.jazzliitto.fi/2023/04/kansainvalinen-jazzpaiva).
