The cherry trees of Turku’s renovated market square are beginning to show different shades of pink and pink, fittingly, as the square prepares for the weekend’s May Day celebration. In some of the trees, the buds have already burst into flower.
During the finishing works of the market square in September, 24 cherry trees were planted around the market square.

In Turku’s cultural capital year 2011, 222 cherry trees were planted from the lower reaches of Aurajoki towards Koroi. Most of them are ornamental cherry trees, there are about 20 species.
The first flowering starts near Manilla, proceeding to Korois, where the flowering can last until mid-June. The main flowering of the riverside cherry trees has been around Mother’s Day for several years.
Today, there are about 1,000 cherry trees in the city. Flowering lasts about a week, depending on the weather.
