The Last Atlantis is a dystopian story about the power and importance of water. The story tells about Tobeaks, who enjoyed his life, who is thrown into the vortex of the apocalypse in the middle of an intercontinental flight.
The play is based on Antti Hyyrynen’s debut novel of the same name. In addition, Stam1na has an album with the same name.
\”Made the viewer think with their head and not their tail\”
The performance of the year was chosen by the audience. The last Atlantis collected 44 percent of all votes. Seven theatrical performances chosen by journalists and critics were nominated in the contest.
Those who voted for the last Atlantis justified the show’s superiority as follows, among other things:
*The last Atlantis appeals to all the senses and touches on an emotional level. Raises thoughts about the future of the entire planet – can you expect more from one theater performance?*
*A timely, thrilling show! Made the viewer think with their head and not their tail!*
*It is quite an achievement that a Finnish metal record has turned into a play through a book. The play was made with thought and ambition. The natural upheavals had been nicely executed on a small stage.*
*The stage transforms into the warmth of the apocalypse, threatening and comforting at the same time. For the dramaturgy of light design, sound design and moving text. A timeless experience in which the viewer remains floating for a long time like in an electronic dream.*
*The show is a great whole that makes you think for a long time. What is really happening to the world?*
Will there be a sequel?
The last Atlantis play will have additional performances next fall at the Lappeenranta City Theatre. When the nomination was announced in February, Hyyrynen promised that his journey as a theater maker could be continued, and perhaps even in connection with the award-winning performance.
– Something big is coming, but I dare not reveal what, because I am only the author and sound designer of the original work, laughs Hyyrynen.
The last Atlantis premiered last November at the Lappeenranta City Theatre.
The purpose of the Thalia award is to reward a performance that arouses social debate, attracts new audience groups, is internationally successful or otherwise particularly meritorious, and thus generates a discussion about the meaning of theater art. The Thalia of the year performance has been awarded since 2010.
