The new technology is about to be tested on this protection road near the Möysä roundabout.

The new technology will be tested at the eastern end of Karjalankatu. The system will use lights to warn cars approaching the crossing.

Lahti is considering a new type of radar-based system to improve security on Karjalankatu.

The system monitors pedestrians and cyclists using the crossing and cars approaching it. There are warning lights on both sides of the crossing for motorists and illuminated crossing signals that light up when a pedestrian or cyclist approaches the crossing.

If necessary, the system will sound an audible warning if the radar detects a car approaching the crossing too fast.

The equipment supplier’s material includes warning lights and detection equipment. Destia would supply and implement the system in Lahti.

– Almost every year someone is injured at this crosswalk.

The cost estimate for the new equipment is 40,000 euros. The city environment board will discuss the matter on Wednesday.

According to Polojärvi, such crosswalks are still a rarity in Finland, but they are already in use in Estonia, for example.
