Drummer, producer and recording artist Janne Haavisto is an integral part of the Finnish music landscape. In a career spanning more than 40 years, he has worked with many of Finland’s top artists.
In addition to his work as a drummer, Haavisto has also worked as a record producer and recording artist with many of Finland’s top artists. The fact that the National Library’s archives contain more than 1 300 copyright titles under Haavisto’s name is a testament to his prolific output.
As a producer, Haavisto has also worked with Juice, Kari Tapio and Jorma Kääriäinen. He has a clear vision of the role of the producer.
– The producer does what is needed to make the album as good as possible and helps the artist or band to make an album that is as original as possible and in line with their own vision, sums up Haavisto.
It sounds simple, but in practice the situation is often much more complex.
The biggest part of a producer’s job is psyching up, says Haavisto.
– When the lack of faith surprises, it is the producer’s job to maintain a positive atmosphere, even if he knows in his soul that we are screwed – the money is about to run out, and nothing has been done yet, laughs Haavisto.
The producer is also responsible for making sure the album is finished on time and that the production stays within the budget.
– It’s hard work at times and takes a toll on the psyche, but when you’re excited and hungry to do it, you’re ready.
Does Janne Haavisto sound different?
Janne Haavisto has produced both Finnish and foreign artists. The scale is staggeringly wide.
– From Psychobilly to Katri-Helena. All the projects have been different, although they always have in common the pressure to get a good result quickly and within the budget.
Many well-known producers have their own sound or sound world, which can be distinguished from the records, no matter who the artist is. The Janne Haavisto sound might also distinguish, although that is not the intention.
– I hope it doesn’t break up, even though that might have happened. The danger in a producer’s job is that he thinks he’s making something of his own, even though the purpose is to make a record that looks like an artist as much as possible.
Haavisto has recently reduced the work of the producer and recording artist, with the exception of the records of old friend and collaborator J. Karjalainen.
– They are very unique projects, because I am also involved as a musician. The band members and I have known each other for such a long time that there is no need to introduce anything. You can say that you can’t take it now, let’s continue tomorrow.
– There is the danger that you no longer see the goodness of others and take great playing and a good feeling for granted. However, we have a responsibility to be at our best at every gig. They are unique occasions for the public, so baking is not allowed! It just won’t work!
