The city will continue its work for the 2021 European Capital of the Environment year. Climate objectives need to be accompanied by means to maintain biodiversity.
Lahti wants to continue its work as European Capital of the Environment and extend its environmental objectives.
The city is about to become a partner of Sitra, the Finnish Fund for the Celebration of Finland’s Independence, in a project to build a pioneering sustainability pilot. The results can later be extended to other cities at home and abroad.
Many cities already have a carbon neutrality target, for example, but this alone is not enough.
The costs of the project are around 340,000 euros, of which Sitra pays three quarters. Other partners such as companies are also being sought.
The city of Lahti is responsible for driving the project, but the goal is to get results in the entire Lahti region.
The city’s financing share of the 2023-2025 project is a total of 40,000 euros. The city council will discuss the matter on Monday.
