UMK threatens to run away to another big city – Turku is firmly holding on to its hosting of the competition

Turkuhalli stands in the TPS-Kärpät match.
The hockey team of Turku Palloseura uses Turkuhalli a lot, but other big events are already organized there.

Event center Logomo has proven to be too small a place for a popular event. The City of Turku and the Event Producers present Turkuhalli as a solution.

The city is ready to help the event organizer in every way, including communication. According to Kirkkola, Turku has already shown itself to be a strong event city.

– Turku could become Finland’s San Remo. Turku is such a great cultural city, Kirkkola envisions.

Event center Logomo has proven to be too small a place for a popular event. According to Kirkkola, Turkuhalli would be a good alternative for that.

– Turkuhalli is a great and functional arena. It definitely bends into an arena of competition.

Lordi won in Turku in 2006

Lordi won the Eurovision Finland qualifier held in Turku in 2006. At that time, the venue was the event hall connected to the current Holiday Club Caribbean.

– I have announced that Turkuhalli is available if UMK is looking for a new home. I have brought our strengths to the attention of the event organizer. Of course, Yle makes the decision independently, says Aho.

Aho knows that there is a need for a bigger event than before, because this year the popularity was strong and the tickets sold out quickly. Turkuhalli can accommodate 8,000 customers. It is clearly bigger than Logomo, which could accommodate 1,500 spectators.

– UMK’s production requirements are, of course, a little different than in a normal concert. The realistic audience number is around 6,000–7,000.

The advantage of Turkuhalli is that there is plenty of space for the production and the audience.

– Even in the normal season, we have had, for example, Disney on Ice-type tours. They too have needed many days for construction and demolition, so we are familiar with it. TV productions are familiar to us, because we do them many times every week at TPS hockey matches, says Aho.

Aho plans to give Yle’s production team a little time to breathe, but it’s time to get in touch. The ice hockey league program is about to be shut down, so that’s why we need to get clarity on the matter soon.

An experienced event producer trusts Turkuhalli

– There is demand and it shows that UMK is starting to work as a concept and now it would really be worth considering alternatives. 15,000 spectators go to the Tampere arena. Helsinki ice rink, Turkuhalli and Espoo arena are other options.

According to Haarala, it’s about which city wants the event the most.

– Last weekend, Turkuhalli was sold out when there was an event for trumpet players. There was a very good atmosphere there. The uproar was huge. Turkuhalli is a nice place because there is a lot of hard surface. The sound reverberates when the crowd screams a lot. It’s a real witch’s cauldron.

Haarala also reminds that there are many events in the hall in Tampere and two ice hockey teams play there.

– The Turku event office and Antti Kirkkola have to do a lot of work in order to convince Yleisradio’s decision-makers and bring the race to Turku. I bet that Turku is strong, because there is a desire to have the event still held in the city.
