The number of visitors to Patvinsuo National Park is increasing.
About 17,000 visits were made to the park, which was established to protect a wilderness marsh area, last year.
According to the visitor survey announced by Metsähallitus on Friday, Patvinsuo is especially popular among hikers from North Karelia and North Savoia. Their share of visitors is more than 40 percent.
Most of the visitors hike in the national park in small groups of 2–5 people.
The number of people moving alone has increased compared to the previous visitor survey about 10 years ago. There are now 20 percent of them.
On average, visitors to Patvinsuo travel about 16 kilometers in the national park, mostly hiking. In addition, you can move around the park by cycling, paddling or rowing. The most popular destinations are Suomu, Kurkilahti and Teretinniemi.
Those who responded to the visitor survey are particularly satisfied with the area’s parking spaces, general cleanliness, and firewood in the huts and fireplaces. Complaints are given about the road and caravan sites.
Patvinsuo’s visitors’ average spending has increased from 37 euros to 54 euros per visit.
The overall local economic effects of Patvinsuo National Park have almost tripled from around 250,000 euros to 670,000 euros in ten years.
The national park, established in 1982, is located in the municipalities of Lieksa and Ilomantsi.
