Seven lightweight cottages are planned for rent next summer on Viikinsaari in Tampere. No permission has yet been granted.

A Helsinki-based start-up company plans to bring seven Zero cabins to Viikinsaari next summer. The lightweight huts will take three days to erect and are not intended to leave any permanent changes to the natural environment.

Viikinsaari is partly a nature reserve, and there is also a 1.3-kilometre-long marked nature trail around it. The nature reserve covers an area of more than 10 hectares and is located in the western part of the island.

The island of Viikin has traditionally been a day-trip destination, so offering accommodation is new. Traditionally, people have come to Viikinsaari to go hiking or to participate in events organised there.

– The zeros do not increase the number of visitors to Viikinsaaari much, we expect about 100 overnight stays in each cabin per year.

Application for cottages not yet submitted

Joel Uussaari says that the application will be submitted by the end of February.

When the application arrives, statements are requested from, among others, the Pirkanmaa ELY center and Tampere environmental protection.

– Then let’s see what the statements contain and how to proceed with the matter. Neighbors will also be consulted for the deviation permit and the project will be announced in Aamulehti, so we will definitely get feedback from the local residents as well, Kinos adds.

According to Kinos, the deviation permit process takes about six weeks.

– I don’t dare to say anything about the processing times for building control applications, i.e. I don’t know if the cottages will be ready for this summer, if the deviation permit can be defended at all.

Cottage developed over a couple of years

The cabins are manufactured in Parkano, and their main raw material is spruce plywood. There is room for two to four overnighters in one cabin.

The cottages were first reported by the city newspaper Tamperelainen.
