FC Lahti’s dream of entering the European football fields dried up on Wednesday, when the team lost to Kuopio Palloseura in the semi-final of the Finnish Cup at their home stadium.

The Lahti team played most of the match with one man advantage, when the Kuopio team’s goalkeeper Otso Virtanen received a red card for his play outside the penalty area.

Kuopio’s 0-1 winning goal came moments before Virtanen’s free kick, which bounced off the wall from the player from Lahti and into the net.

The team is now focusing on their league games. There are two matches left in the regular season and then the challenger series beckons. FC Lahti is second last.

– We have to fight to stay in the league. It takes an ungodly amount of energy, faith and will.
