Jyväskylä is the first municipality in Finland to audit its forest programme – forest management has been implemented in line with the objectives

Auditing means assessing how the objectives set for forest management have been implemented in practice. Jyväskylä has been very successful in implementing the policies.

The objectives for forest management were set in the 2018 Forest Programme, which guides the use of Jyväskylä’s forests until 2030.

The programme brings together many of the values associated with forest management. Nature organisations, representatives of the forestry sector and forest industry, and the Finnish Forestry Agency, among others, participated in its preparation.

According to the evaluation, Jyväskylä has so far been successful in implementing the policies of its forest programme.

The city has achieved the goals set until 2030. For example, the 17 percent protection level of forests owned by the city has been achieved.

Things to improve were found, for example, in the documentation of saving trees left for forest patterns in the city’s forest reserve system. The clearing of small stands could also have been done more moderately in some places, leaving more small uncleared thickets.
