Lake ice in Etelä-Savo will be thinner than average this winter

An anonymous person measures the thickness of the ice.
Based on mid-winter measurements, the ice winter in South Savo will be below average this time.

As expected, the mid-winter frosts have slightly strengthened the ice cover on lakes in South Savo. However, the ice cover is thinner than average and the strength varies widely.

In the lakes of South Savo, the total ice cover thickness varied between 30 and 45 cm in early February measurements.

The strength was measured last Friday and it was also found that it varies greatly within a single lake.

On average, ice thicknesses across South Savo will be 1-11 cm below the average for this millennium.

The thickest measured ice cover was measured at Haukivedi in Oravi, where 45 cm thick ice was measured. The thickness of the ice in the pool water was 34 cm.

Compared to measurements taken at the end of January, the ice has strengthened by 1–6 cm.

The thickness of the steel ice was at least 15 cm at all other measurement points except Oravi, which is calculated as the weight of the snowmobile.

There is no information available on the strength of steel ice for squirrels.

In South Savo, the ice cover is covered by a 6–8 cm thick layer of snow.

Snow weakens the effect of frost, so based on the weather data of the coming weeks and the measurements of previous winters, the thickening of the ice layer in Etelä Savo will probably be 1-5 centimeters.

Ice’s strengths are followed by the Ely center in Etelä-Savo.
