The City of Tampere has awarded the Ikur Ice Sculpture Trail with the 2022 Cultural Achievement of the Year Award. The prize is awarded annually.

The trail, which runs through the forest in the residential area of Ikur, is a popular winter destination for visitors of all ages. The trail is organised by the sports club Ikurin Vire.

Last year, you could meet familiar characters from the collection of poems titled The Fairy Tale Tree on the sculpture trail.

– The Ice Sculpture Trail is a fine example of a worthy and community-based grassroots cultural and civic activity, the city justifies the selection in a press release.

The beginning of the ice sculpture trail dates back 25 years, when the people behind the project organized the first winter event around snow sculpture. The ice sculpture trail was implemented for the first time in the winter of 2017.

– Combining nature and sculptures has always fascinated me, but transporting ice from the lake to the forest and working it into sculptures in the forest is a challenge. However, we decided to try and it has gone well, says Kari Manninen, who was responsible for the design and implementation of the sculpture trail, in the press release.

The basis of the Culture Achievement Award is a special effort in developing or enriching the cultural scene in Tampere. The recipient of the award was decided on the basis of suggestions from the municipalities at the meeting of the education and culture committee in January.

The award was presented on Thursday, February 9, at the Experience Economy Forum in Tampere.
