The chimney of the old glass factory is a familiar sight in the landscape of Lahti harbour.

According to the Building and Environment Board, dismantling the chimney would hinder, among other things, the zoning of the area.

There are no plans to dismantle the old glass factory pipe located in the port of Lahti. The Building and Environmental Permit Board decided on the matter at its meeting on Tuesday.

The chimney is a protected building in the city’s site plan, whose owner applied for a deviation permit to dismantle the chimney.

According to the board, the demolition of a protected building causes harm to planning and the implementation of the plan. For this reason, the matter should be dealt with by means of zoning.

The value of a chimney is not only related to its material but also to its position in the cityscape, states the Building and Environmental Permit Board. According to the board, the status is influenced by visual, aesthetic, symbolic and values \u200b\u200brelated to the city’s identity.

The board also states that the special reason for dismantling the chimney, safety, has been ensured by structural means.

Due to the danger caused by objects falling from the chimney, a protective structure was built around the chimney in December 2022.
