Yle Puhe will be silent after a year. We want to transfer the channel’s distribution costs to making the content.
Yle’s supervisory board has decided to end the Yle Puhe radio channel.
The decision is based on a change in media use.
Yle Puhe is the smallest of Yle’s Finnish-language national radio channels. Its weekly reach is only a few percent.
– On the other hand, listening to podcasts in Areena has grown significantly. Already a fifth of Areena’s consumption is audio, Vilén states.
Yle’s supervisory board decided to terminate Yle Puhee today, Tuesday. However, Yle Puhe will be heard for another year.
Yle Puhe has also been a sports channel for a long time. It has been possible to listen to various sports competitions and matches live from there. The fate of the sport is still being discussed.
– Most likely, sports content will be transferred to Areena and Yle Radio Suomi. There is still time to think about this for a year.
The money saved is used to make content
The popularity of audio has grown in Finland over the past few years. More and more people are listening to podcasts and audiobooks. The popularity of podcasts and recorded programs is also reflected in traditional broadcast radio.
– When we use resources, i.e. tax money, we have to think carefully about how we use them. In this case, it is better to invest in content creation rather than distribution.
Yle Puhe fundamentally changed just over a year ago. That’s when the channel ran out of live, scheduled broadcasts. Currently, the program consists of podcasts made for Yle Areena, reruns of programs from other channels and sports.
After a year, the content heard in Yle Puhee can be found on Yle Areena and other radio channels.
Yle Puhe was founded 17 years ago to bring together Yle’s speech programs. The channel operated for a long time completely without music.
Yle still has five national radio channels in FM distribution: Yle Radio Suomi, Yle Radio 1, YleX, Yle Vega and Yle X3M. In addition, Yle Areena has increased the offering of podcasts and other audio content.
