Finally for Finns to see: Pilvi Takala’s work revealing the flaws in the security industry is on display in Espoo

Three guards.
Visual artist Pilvi Takala worked as a law enforcement officer herself and observed the problems in the industry.

The work \”Under surveillance\” critically examines the use of power in the private security sector.

*Under surveillance* had its premiere at the Finnish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale last spring. The installation has not been shown in Finland before.

*Under surveillance* is based on Takala’s experiences while working undercover as a security guard trained by Securitas in a Finnish shopping center.

The videos of the piece were filmed in a three-day workshop organized by Pilvi Takala. Its subject was the racism, violence and harmful behavior encountered at the workplace with former colleagues.

The discussion about the problems and grievances of the security industry has made the work even more topical. Takala’s work considers, among other things, ethical questions related to the use of power by law enforcers.

Pilvi Takala is an internationally known Finnish artist who explores different communities and work cultures in her works.

*Under supervision is on display at EMMA 1.2. – 7. 5.2023.*
