Media artist has been using AI in her work for five years – “It offers more possibilities than traditional sculpture”

Media artist Jukka Hautamäki’s work has included artificial intelligence since 2018. Two of his digital artworks can be seen on the computer monitor in the background.

AI is a new playmate for the artist, changing the way creativity is done. Many artists are experiencing new and surprising creativity through AI.

Artificial intelligence refers to computer systems and programs that are able to make use of large amounts of data, learn something from it, and thereby modify their own actions.

The European Commission divides AI into two different parts: software and embodied AI. Software includes search engines, speech and facial recognition systems, etc. Embodied AI includes robots, self-driving cars and drones.

But can AI be creative?

“An important quality is the ability to adapt to new things.”

– In the same way, it was about building images, like working with artificial intelligence.\n Hautamäki’s works are about rematerialization. He collects interesting textures and shapes in front of the camera, takes a picture and takes it to a program with which he produces artificial intelligence art. According to him, artificial intelligence enables things that could not be realized in traditional sculpture.

When the program using artificial intelligence processes the photo taken by Hautamäki, versions of different material combinations begin to appear on the screen. A photo that has not yet been processed by the AI \u200b\u200bprogram is called a seed image. Shape combinations of different surfaces and things are built on top of the initial image.

Hautamäki’s work is creative and playful. Humor is also part of Hautamäki’s work process.\n – I’ve named it (the picture) a vegetable head, don’t ask why.\n Artificial intelligence has drawn abstract metal surfaces and hair on top of a round shape consisting of plants. The head of the fish can also be distinguished from the picture.\n Hautamäki does not feel that artificial intelligence is a threat to artists.\n – In this time, one really important characteristic is the ability to adapt to the new. Artists working with artificial intelligence are not going to be unemployed just yet. Let’s say it like this.

You can try artificial intelligence at home

AI art generators have made it possible to create AI art by entering just a few words into the program. Such generators are, for example, DALL-E 2, which everyone can try.\n By inputting the DALL-E 2 into the program “hamster on a flower” or “explosion in the refrigerator”, the generator produces several images that did not exist before.

Artificial intelligence is part of a revolution in the arts

For the first time artificial intelligence rose among artists when a portrait of Edmond de Belamy created by artificial intelligence was sold at an auction for a very high price, 432,500 dollars.

– It still means something new or interesting or surprising that can be accomplished. But with artificial intelligence, the way of doing creativity changes, that is, we are talking about co-creativity.\n According to Lundman, a breakthrough is taking place in the automatic production of images and language, which is why many may perceive artificial intelligence in art as a threat.

However, many artists accept artificial intelligence as a new tool that also acts as a playmate in brainstorming ideas and producing something new and interesting.
