According to the City of Rovaniemi, the safest thing to do is to say not to go on the ice at all, as it can be life-threatening.

The City of Rovaniemi, Visit Rovaniemi and the Lapland Rescue Service ask Airbnb hosts to warn tourists about the exceptionally poor ice conditions in the area. According to the city, they have no way of reaching self-catering tourists effectively without the help of accommodation providers.

They have produced a text in English which they invite accommodation providers to use. The text can be printed from the city’s website or obtained from Visit Rovaniemi info.

According to the city, the safest thing to do is to say not to go on the ice at all, as it can be life-threatening. If you see someone going onto the ice, for example near the city centre, you should direct them to the shore or call 112.

The reason for the thin ice is, in addition to the mild winter, the unusual discharges of the hydroelectric power plants, which can change the ice situation in regulated waterways throughout the winter. According to the city, blackouts can form in surprising places and they can extend over a wider area than normal.
