Column by Sisko Savonlahti: I was unhappy – but then I started splurging on overpriced cosmetics and I was both broke and unhappy

Who can comfort a middle-aged woman trying to love herself and her sagging skin in a capitalist society, asks Savonlahti.

I turned 40 this autumn – to the sound of drums. I went out to buy a blackcurrant chocolate cake and invited a few friends over. I received a flower delivery from my publisher.

As I placed the bouquet in the vase, I muffled my inner voice, which was reading in my head sentences like “Why are you so excited – sending one bouquet to a penman is no job for a serious publisher” and “Do you think flowers have anything to do with your ‘specialness’? Probably the bouquet was sent so that you wouldn’t forget that the publisher is expecting a new book from you… so shouldn’t you do something about it?”

As I watched a vision in my living room that could almost have been called a “flower camera”, I tried to put the negativity behind me.

\”Sister, today is your birthday,\” I said to myself. \”You are important!\”

You just can’t believe it all the time. This is what I was thinking when I was looking through the advertising brochures of a large department store, which told about the autumn trends. I tried to find an affordable face cream for daily use. Maybe one of my old favorites would be on sale?

\”Skin structure strengthening cream\” was sold to me with the phrase \”Full power against lines\”. (50 milliliters, 80 euros.)

The promise of the multi-effect cream was to \”significantly reduce many signs of aging\”. (50 milliliters, 84.90 euros.)

It also turned out that the cream containing harungana extract (50 milliliters) would cost 112.50 euros. What is Harungana Extract? Of course, \”a natural alternative to retinol that restores the youthfulness of the skin\”.

But at the latest when I turned 40 and looked in the mirror, I came to a different conclusion. Namely, that I actually *had* been scammed. Before long, aging can be seen in the skin, no matter how you smear it with cosmetics.

The call to go \”full power against the lines\” is disgusting and sick. As if aging – which some might also call staying alive – is the worst thing that can happen to a woman.

Pitt’s set is said to be luxurious and inspired by wine.

I don’t know about wines (other than that I like to get drunk on them), but at least the prices of Pitti creams are not for the masses. For example, a 30 milliliter jar of Le Sérum costs 350 euros. Le price per liter? You can calculate it yourself.

In a time when body positivity is talked about a lot, where does wrinkle positivity stay? Why is it that self-acceptance does not extend to our face?

Created by Beigbeder, who worked in an advertising agency before publishing his book, the ad man’s mission is to make people drool. \”In this profession, no one wishes you luck, because happy people don’t spend.\”

I don’t know if there will ever be a day when women are not told to be afraid of natural changes in their appearance. At least that day was not seen in 2022.

Before that, Evangelista, who was one of the most famous top models of the 90s, had been hiding from the public for years. The reason was failed cosmetic operations.

However, the emergency on the cover of Vogue did not look like this. The pictures could be taken as long as the former top model’s face was first taped tightly. Various hats and scarves made sure that the tapes and rubber bands remained hidden.

One quote from Evangelista was chosen for the cover of the magazine. \”I try to love myself as I am,\” it reads.

So do I, Linda. So do I. But it is not made easy.
