Metsähallitus tightens its target on carbon stocks
Metsähallitus says it has tightened its carbon stock target by five years compared to the previous climate programme.
The aim is to increase carbon sinks in the state’s multi-use forests by 10% by 2035.
The goal is to increase the carbon stocks of state-owned forests by 10% by 2030 compared to 2018 levels, the release says.
The decision is based on calculations completed this spring by the Natural Resources Institute Finland, which show that state forests continue to act as a significant carbon sink.
According to Metsähallitus, the carbon storage is growing, although the throat is reduced due to slowing down forest growth and specific calculation methods.
