Damage to forests caused by bookworm has increased, especially in the past decade, according to inventories by the Natural Resources Institute Finland and statistics on insect damage by the Forestry Commission.

As the climate warms, insect pests are expected to increase further.

Insect damage reduces the quality of the wood and its sale value.

The Natural Resources Institute of Finland has estimated that the share of financial losses caused by forest fires accounted for by accountants is around EUR 4.5-12 million annually.
