Jyrkinen from North Karelia has been working in demanding conditions in Lapland for more than a decade.

In Lapland, many things happen on the conditions of nature, including the work of a veterinarian

In Lapland, the work of a veterinarian varies according to the season, and many things take place on the conditions of nature. A clear difference to the rest of Finland is the focus of veterinarian’s work on reindeer, especially their separation time, which lasts from October to February-March.

– It’s about professional sports when I go with the parasite peak around the enclosure. At the same time, reindeer owners catch the reindeer and ask for a spike, so you can wade up sometimes even in deep snow, smiles Jyrkinen.

Particularly in the busiest years, the large amount of work also made Jyrkinen reflect on whether he was to work.

– Even reindeer separations do not always look at the time. Often, work is not returned to work until late at night and at eight in the morning the phone starts playing again. In addition, veterinarians are on duty around the clock, along with regular working days. I have had to think a lot about whether I have for this job at all.

Jyrkinen’s field of work is also geographically extensive as it extends from Inar to Utsjoki.

However, the nature and diverse work of Lapland is the reason why he once decided to stay north.

– It is attractive that nature and seasons determine our work. It has been wonderful that you can work outdoors and be involved, for example, with the separation designs. It’s a brisk and hearty job.

Working in reindeer herding is a big part of Venla Jyrkinen’s job description.

According to the Board of Directors of the Finnish Veterinary Association, Jyrkinen is an exemplary 37-year-old influencer who operates constructively and collegially. His way of dealing with coping at work, the role of primary production and the humanity of the veterinarian have been much praised.

The Veterinary Award of the Year award is awarded annually on the basis of significant veterinary medicine, veterinary medicine or the work of the veterinary community. The members of the union may propose awards and the decision is made by the union’s government on the basis of proposals.

Jyrkinen has also described the everyday life of a veterinarian and the challenges of it in his book *as a veterinarian in the Northern Lights *. The work highlights the joys and shadows of the veterinarian’s work in a way that opens the reality of the profession to the general public.

– I wanted to open up the reality of the work through the story because the vet often does not have the opportunity to participate in public debate with his own voice, says Jyrkinen.
