The Kainuu forest deer is going badly – the calves and vascular females are record
According to the Natural Resources Center, about 700 forest deer overwinter in Kainuu this winter. Only four percent of them were calves.
At the moment, the Kainuu forest deer is doing poorly.
According to Luke, the Natural Resources Center, the portion of the Vasos in the wintering deer population of Kainuu this year was recordly weak, about four percent, or less than 30 individuals. Normally, 10-15 % of the wintering deer stock is 10-15 %.
In last year’s spring winter, Luke had to suspend the calculation of the Kainuu forest deer, as the deer were so scattered and there were few collars.
In the context of the winter calculation of 2024, the computing team found more dead, partly eating forest deer than in any previous calculation.
Indeed, last winter’s prey is one of the reasons why forest deer wintered so little in Kainuu now.
This winter, Luke discovered deer herds in Kainuu mostly Ristijärvi and in Sotkamo in the ridge area between Huhtikangas and Kukkoharju.
Elsewhere in Kainuu, forest deer were found in Paltamo Kontiomäki, Sotkamo in Sahaharju, Sumsa village and the shores of the water surrounding Sotkamo.
