Tampere’s most popular tourist destination was opened on May 1975. Over the years, nearly 27 million people have visited the Särkänniemi Amusement Park.

The City of Tampere was founded by Särkänniemi Oy in 1967. The first tourist destinations, the aquarium and planetario at the foot of Näsinneula, were opened in 1969.

3. Dolphins raised the number of visitors to the clouds – and caused a reputation damage

In 1985, a dolphinarium was opened in Särkänniemi, whose stars Niki, Näsi, Veera, Delf and Joona were caught in Florida’s Mexican Gulf and flown to Tampere.

Particularly in the late 1990s, the dolphinarium attracted a huge number of people to Särkänniemi, many of whom also visited the amusement park.

Five dolphins were flown to the dolphinarium from Mexico. Several chicks were born in Tampere, but only Leevi and Eevertti survived.

From the beginning, the dolphinarium also aroused opposition. Criticism increased when the chicks born in the dolphinarium died. Little by little, the number of visitors also decreased.

In 2015, the dolphinaria was closed, and in the summer of 2016, Särkänniemi flew dolphins to Greece. An attempt was made to keep the transfer operation secretly and caused a lot of negative attention to Särkänniemi.

4. The same devices keep their ground from year to year

A new device will be introduced almost every year in Särkänniemi. This year’s novelty is the car carroll Drifti, which is located outside the actual amusement park area.

Särkänniemi reports that last summer the most visitors were in Tornado. The device, introduced in 2001, has always been one of the most popular devices in Särkänniemi.

5. Approximately half a million people visit the amusement park each year

Särkänniemi has been one of Tampere’s most important tourist destinations since the beginning. According to Särkänniemi, a total of about 26.7 million people have visited amusement parks alone.

6. In Koron summer, exceptional arrangements were entertained

In the spring of 2020, Särkänniemi had had time to recruit future summer workers when the corona pandemia also struck Finland. When the government announced interest rates, it seemed that the amusement park might have to be held.

Finally, in mid -June, about a month and a half later, the amusement park was opened.

The summer was marked by strict restrictions: the number of customers was limited to 20 % of normal, the equipment and queues followed large safety intervals, staff used plastic visits and cleaned equipment.

Särkänniemi is a major summer employee in Pirkanmaa. According to the company, about 400-500 seasonal workers have been hired every summer in recent years. Even in the corona year, 350 summer workers were hired.

Many summer workers are working in Särkänniemi for several years, and troops generally also progress to more demanding tasks.
