Customers have noticed the cost-saving measures, but the feedback is nevertheless mostly positive. We listed four things where hotels can make savings.
Hotels and spas consume a lot of energy, but they are also fully involved in energy savings.
How can you save while the customer has come for pleasure, warmth and peace? On the other hand, there have even been rumors that some have gone to save electricity in a hotel, when the electricity bill at home is so high.
We visited two chains of hotels in Turku. Savings can be made hidden from customers, or customers can even demand them.
Lighting savings with motion detectors
The lights flash on when you enter the corridor at night. Some spots have been disabled if general lighting is sufficient anyway.
Motion detectors play an important role when hotels are looking for ways to save energy.
– Here in the room, the dim lighting stays on overnight in the bathroom. The customer doesn’t even notice that the room has light motion detectors. The lights come on before he opens the door, says Henriksson.
This hotel has saved 40 percent in the number of kilowatt hours over the course of a few months.
Room temperature down a degree
Sometimes the customer may be wary of touching the devices. The room temperature can now be adjusted correctly with permission.
Hotel chains are running a national Astetta alemmas campaign.
– The controls are in good condition, so the customer can easily set the temperature themselves, says Mikko Henriksson from Scandic Hamburger Börs.
Outdoor pool closed and showers closed
It was decided to close the outdoor pool at Holiday Club Caribia. The customers themselves were active and suggested it.
– There has been surprisingly little negative feedback. An outdoor pool takes a lot of energy in winter frosts. Our electricity bill as a whole is then tens of thousands of euros, says hotel manager Valtola.
Scandic has received individual feedback about the function of the showers. They have been regulated recently so that, for example, Scandic Hamburger Börs gets the Joutsenmark, which tells about the environmental criteria.
– As for the shower, the Joutsenmarkki requires that nine and a half liters of water flow per minute. That’s the limit value. When the shower heads and water fixtures are of high quality, the customer will not notice the change, assures hotel manager Henriksson.
Heat the saunas as needed
Saunas are real energy eaters. For example, Holiday Club Caribia’s saunas consume the equivalent of eight ordinary home saunas.
– During the high season, i.e. now, the saunas are in use all the time, but on quiet weekday mornings they are supposed to be closed. The customer can still go to the steam sauna to warm up, says hotel manager Valtola.
Scandic Hamburger Börsi, located in the center of Turku, has only one sauna, which only heats up in the evenings. In the past, you could also go to the sauna in the morning. There have been some complaints about the cold sauna.
– In the future, i.e. after the turn-of-the-year season, we will only heat the sauna by order, says hotel manager Henriksson.
