Rovaniemi’s Jukka Huitila’s work \”Koski\” is on display in Korkeasaari. He would like to see more bold use of lights in Rovaniemi too, for example light art would be appropriate on the riverside.
Jukka Huitila lives in Rovaniemi. He makes place-related works, light architecture, immersive performances and stage art. The relationship between light and nature and free-flowing rapids are central themes in Huitila’s works.
– I have studied natural light for two decades and I draw from it in my work, be it stage art or light art.
Huitila describes his Koski piece in such a way that it is a spatial experience rather than a light experience.
– Although there is a video image and light produced by a video cannon, the sound is an organic part. The roar and thunder of the rapids is felt in the sternum, and thus it is a spatial experience.
According to Jukka Huitila, there are good opportunities to make light art in Lapland when half the year is dark. He would also like to see bolder use of lights in his hometown.
– It’s a shame that the riverside is pretty nondescript. It lacks a cafe and light art.
To counterbalance the carnival-like flashing advertising lights of Rovaniemi’s core, Huitila needs a calmer approach. He could make a \”calm work that doesn’t blink or flash\” himself.
– The kind of rhythm that is related to natural light and this climate where we live here. Huitila describes the light of the sunset and the reflection of the light on the surface of the water and the mist rising from the river.
