The waste rally is now in full swing – a professional recognizes the leftovers from the Christmas table by the color of the bio waste

Sorting Christmas waste makes it easier for both homes and garbage trucks. The collection of Christmas waste started on Tuesday, some haulage companies already started work on Boxing Day.

There is enough work in the transportation of waste in Päijät-Hämee all week and even on New Year’s Eve. To be on the move with full equipment in two shifts. Towards the end of the week, the pace is getting tighter.

The garbage cans are full, the dishes are sagging and the yards can be slippery. Customers should make sure that there is room for things in the waste bins and that the canopies are easily accessible.

Sorting leaves much to be desired

There is still room for improvement in the sorting of Christmas waste, although the situation has improved over the years, according to professionals.

– Pretzel boxes and cardboard are too often lost in mixed waste and \\instead of separate collection\\ also in energy.

According to Jänti, tentacle cans have ended up among the bio-waste.

Christmas color in bio waste

Small changes in the composition and color of biowaste can be observed after Christmas compared to normal weeks.

According to Wassholm, napkins, flowers, multipurpose, all Christmas decorations made of natural materials and pet bedding are suitable for bio waste.

On the other hand, biodegradable or bio-based cutlery and other utensils prepared for eating are not suitable for bio waste.

– Cutlery takes such a long time to decompose that they don’t have time to decompose during plant processing. The correct address for them is energy waste.

The ham fat and liquids produced at Christmas can be absorbed into a paper towel and put in the bio waste container.

Also this year, the nationwide Kinkkutemppu campaign collects ham fat for fuel. The collection will continue until the beginning of January. Collection points have been placed near shops.

Reduction in mixed waste

Although Christmas in particular increases packaging and bio waste from households, the school and educational institution holidays equalize the load that ends up at waste stations.

The amount of mixed waste seems to be decreasing in Päijät-Häme this year compared to the previous one. Last year, according to Salpakierto Oy, it was collected from around 200,000 inhabitants, amounting to one million kilos. The reduction is 6-8 percent from before.

There are no statistics on the amount of waste for 2022 yet.

After the corona period, the return to normal seems. According to waste companies, customers have, for example, reduced the intervals between emptying containers.
