Metsähallitus appeals to people in the fells and wilderness: the golden eagle now needs nesting peace

An eagle can flee from its nest if it detects a human hundreds of metres away. The chicks are then badly affected.

Metsähallitus is appealing to free-flight skiers and hikers in the fells to circle the nests of the golden eagle as far away as possible. The breeding season for the endangered golden eagle started in February and the hatching season is currently underway. A golden eagle can abandon a nest at the slightest disturbance.

According to Metsähallitus, hikers should continue their journey quickly if they spot a golden eagle nest or a bird flying from the nest. A golden eagle may spot a person hundreds of metres away and flee from its nest, in which case the eggs may freeze and the chicks may die.

An eagle builds a large nest of twigs in old trees on the slopes of fells and dunes and in forest islands in bogs.

Metsähallitus hopes that snowmobilers will remain on the routes used and free -to -free areas in hobby areas to keep natural peace on the other. The eagle has abandoned nests in areas where people have begun to move.
