Mines in Häme at risk of drought in summer if there is no good rainfall in spring
This year, the snow melted early and groundwater levels rose in late winter. Now groundwater levels are already falling.
Drought threatens wells in the summer if there is no rainfall soon, says the Häme Environment Centre.
According to the Ely Centre’s press release, groundwater levels rose in Häme from late autumn until the end of February. Normally, groundwater levels fall during the winter and rise sharply in the spring as the snow melts. This year, the snow melted early and the groundwater level rose in late winter.
Groundwater levels in Häme are currently at the average level for the period, but are on a downward trend. Heavy rainfall in late spring would be needed to prevent the groundwater situation from deteriorating during the summer and to ensure that domestic wells continue to supply sufficient water during the summer.
An exceptional winter in the lakes too
The surfaces of many lakes have also been down in Häme since February.
The ELY Center says that at this time of year, the regulated lakes of the Kokemäenjoki river are usually rising sharply, but this year there is only a few rise unless there is plenty of rainfall during the spring.
In the unregulated lakes of the Kokemäenjoki river basin, the water level has been declining since February. Liesjärvi’s water level has fallen by about ten centimeters to a lower average season.
The lakes of the Hauho route are still about 15 centimeters higher than usual, but the average level is forecast at the time of the wake.
Päijänne water high, but not rising much more
The water level of the Päijänne in the Pääjärvi Pääjärvi area of the Kymijoki River is almost 30 centimeters higher than the seasonal average. The catchment area of Päijänne extends far to the north, where there is still some snow.
However, the melting of the rest of the snow will not, however, increase the water level higher than usual. In Vesijärvi, the water level is approximately 15 centimeters higher than usual in Ala-Rievel.
