Jouko Högmander, chairman of the Eagle Working Group, has been following changes in archipelago birds for decades.

Volunteering bird calculation aims to find out how the archipelago birds are doing right now.

In the Archipelago Sea, a major bird calculation will be performed in late spring. In the Turku outdoor archipelago, the archipelago birds are observed in four calculation areas.

This is a continuation of the follow -up of 30 years ago.

Bird calculation will be performed in May-June. For a month -long calculation, volunteers who know birds are needed. Salary is not paid, but Metsähallitus and the Arkpelagia Society take care of boat fuel costs, dining and accommodation.

Jouko Högmander has been working on sea eagles for over 50 years.

Högmander says that bird counting is an important way to find out how the archipelago bird is going. According to current information, the archipelago bird may be partly poor and the changes have been major.

-For example, the elastic population has started to decline, and the back and gray slope has decreased. There have been cormorants and white geese. These changes are considered to be worsening.

The elastic strain has fallen so much that the elastic is now classified as an endangered species in Finland.

However, eels nesting on deserted bullets are easy catches for sea eagles.

Högmander hopes that this year’s bird calculation will be particularly reflected in the growth of the elastic.

– Of course, I hope that the ears have gradually learned to keep themselves so hidden that the stock will grow.

People affect the birds

On the other hand, there is also light at the end of the tunnel. Tiirs, small waders, mockery, blue duck, hair eagle and duck have increased.

The reason is the effective eradication of man -made guests from the outer archipelago.

– The removal of the mink and raccoon dogs has been clearly reflected in the recovery of these bird species. Some species have even multiplied.

According to Högmander, the status of birds in the archipelago is constantly changing. Human action and environmental changes are directly reflected in the bird world.

People can also affect the birds locally. For example, bird nesting bullets should not go to breeding time, and dogs should be kept on the archipelago during the breeding season.
