There are tens of thousands of people in Finland who are still watching TV with an outdated technology. Most Finns have acquired a high -definition TV.

All TV shows on the Finnish Broadcasting Company will only be broadcast in high definition (HD) on Tuesday 1 April. The change applies to both antenna and cable TVs. After the change, YLE’s TV shows can only be watched with HD receivers.

HD means high -definition and comes from the English words high definition.

High-level SD broadcasts end on television between Monday and Tuesday night at 02.01.

In Finland, television programs have been broadcasting as high definitions since 2011, and most Finns already have an HD receiver.

– The transition period is long. It has been attempted to ensure that all citizens have had the opportunity to prepare for change.

The rest of Finland’s TV channels will be completely transferred to high-definition on June 30th.

In February 2025, there were about 100,000 TV economies in Finland, where TV shows are still being watched with an old-fashioned TV receiver (SD). According to Sipilä’s estimate, the figure has fallen because many Finns have acquired an HD receiver in recent meters. HD-level receivers are most lacking in elderly people living alone. The channels of the top will be darkened in these devices unless the SD receiver is combined with a set-top box.

– In practice, it means that broadcasts end from the channel positions twenty -one, twenty -two and twenty -five. The change applies to both antenna and cable networks.
