Seasonal worker: “I wouldn’t come to Lapland again if it was not the last option” – exploitation more serious
Seasonal workers are being treated in some places. This winter, the Lapland police have been subjected to one crime report on the treatment of a foreign seasonal worker.
The treatment of seasonal workers in Lapland reveals more blatant cases.
This winter, at least one case has so far also been reported. According to Lapland police, it is currently being investigated under the title Kiskonta.
– It is sad that in some, exploitation is even more serious. That is, such cases referring to berry picking ketches that we have been investigated with the authorities, says Turpeinen.
25 inhabitants, two toilets
Typical problems with contacts that have come to PAM include, for example, resting times, pay and poor condition of the available vehicles.
Also, accommodation is one of the durable speech in the union in contact with employees. According to Turpeinen, situations where six people have been accommodated in the downtown apartment in the downtown and several hundred euros have been charged.
– And because other people live in the living room, you can’t go there. You can use only toilet and kitchen. I feel that it is not suitable for anyone’s dignity.
YLE became aware of several cases where several seasonal workers had been accommodated in the same apartment. For example, in one case, up to 25 people had been accommodated in one apartment. The apartment had nine bedrooms, but only two toilets. Also, there was no oven in the kitchen area, just a kitchenette.
It was an apartment offered by a big, nationwide operator. The renters paid a total of EUR 450 for a single room.
Yle got pictures of the apartment, but the interviews were canceled because people are afraid that they would not get a job in the future. You can see the pictures bigger by clicking them.
“It was really awkward and uncomfortable”
The employer offered Reis Silva accommodation in a joint accommodation of eight people. The rent of the room in a shared room was 300 euros or in its room EUR 500 a month.
In the end, only shared rooms were served with two beds in the small room.
– We really couldn’t fit in the kitchen at the same time.
Reis Silva says that it was difficult for people with different shifts to reconcile their living so that everyone would have enough rest time.
– It was really cumbersome and uncomfortable. Younger residents may not have realized that others wanted to sleep.
Reis Silva also worked for a big, nationwide player.
According to Turpeinen, there are companies that work well, and then there are such, often new companies that do not work as well, he says.
– For example, some companies with a foreign background do not have an idea of \u200b\u200bthe rules the labor market operates in Finland.
The city is not ready for such tourism
For Reis Silva, one season in Lapland’s season work was enough.
After a month’s accommodation, he found his own double in the free market for the winter season, where the rent was only slightly higher than it would have been in the shared accommodation in his own room.
– The only problem with its apartment was that the downstairs apartment was in short rental. There, too, it may not have been known that in Finnish apartment buildings, silence began after ten.
The top idea for Reis Silva was from Rovaniemi that too much tourism is not good for the city, tourists or those working with tourism.
– The work itself was nice, but I wouldn’t come to Lapland otherwise if it wasn’t the last option. I felt that things were not done carefully or correctly.
According to Reis Silva, tourism is clearly overheated in Rovaniemi and at some point it will retaliate.
