Rovaniemi’s growing tourist numbers have sparked a heated debate.

The number of air passengers is expected to break the one million mark already this year.

Rovaniemi was bustling with tourists last year, especially at Christmas time. Between 1 July and 31 December 2024, the number of registered overnight stays increased by 20% compared to the same period in 2023. Unregistered overnight stays, including short-stay rentals, increased by as much as 48%.

Strong growth in non-registered nights

Last year, Rovaniemi had 1.5 million overnight stays, an increase of 19% compared to the previous year. There were 862 000 registered nights and 619 000 unregistered nights. Unregistered nights increased by a whopping 51%. Hotel capacity in Rovaniemi is limited, which partly explains the strong growth in unregistered nights, such as short-stay rentals.

Number of air passengers still growing

Visit Rovaniemi estimates that the number of one million air passengers will be broken in Rovaniemi already this year. Last year, Rovaniemi Airport came close with 948,000 passengers. During the current winter season, Rovaniemi received scheduled flights from more than 40 foreign destinations.
