Two people drowned in Häme within a week – ice in lakes in exceptionally poor condition

This winter, the ice cover on Häme lakes has been up to 20 centimetres thinner than the long-term average.

Mild periods have reduced the proportion of coho ice in Häme lakes this winter. The proportion of steelhead has been almost the same as in previous winters.

Yesterday, on Thursday, the ice thickness varied between 24 and 34 centimetres at the four measuring points of the Finnish Environment Institute in Häme.

In Kanta-Häme, the ice cover of Lake Lammi Pääjärvi is 17 centimetres below long-term averages. The ice cover of Lake Kuivajärvi in Tammela is 20 centimetres below average.

In Päijät-Häme, Sysmä, the ice thickness of Päijänne is 11 centimeters on the average and 16 cents on the back.

However, Sainio recalls that even though there has been enough steel ice at the measurement points, it does not apply everywhere. When traveling on the ice, you should always ensure the durability and safe movement of ice.

Sainio says that this winter has been a textbook winter on the effects of climate change. In the winter, long warm episodes are expected in the winter, which will make all the snow melt and the frost will become thinner and shorter.

People have fallen into the ice with fatal consequences

Winter has been exceptional in many ways in Häme lakes. The water is extremely high in many lakes.

Two people who have fallen on the ice have been lost in Häme in March.

The ice cover in the lake has melted from the beach and the edge of the ice stands out from the open water.
In Häme, ice thickness is measured three times a month in winter in four different lakes. On 20 March, the ice thickness in these lakes was 24-34 centimetres.

“I wouldn’t go out playing”

– When the heat cycle of January came in a couple of weeks, I absorb water. Sure, the frost was good and the ice was hardened, but I still don’t talk about steel ice.

According to Mäkinen, even night frosts do not help much. The stick of the stick begins to suck water as the weather goes to the plus during the day.

– When it comes to cheating, it can deceive from the big area so you don’t want to get out of there. The ice has to break a long distance to get on the load -bearing ice.

Petri Mäkinen, fisheries advisor at the Häme Fisheries Centre, is an experienced water walker. Here he is making meadow plantings.

Mäkinen says he has inherited planned groups of schoolchildren due to weak ice. Last week was the last. There have also been canceled ice competitions.

Mäkinen does not remember the winter when the ice would have been so bad.

– Next weekend is the last gig for these ice. I wouldn’t go play anymore. I wait for the ice to leave, and then the fishing rod and the lake.
