According to the agreement signed by the ex-couple, Heard will pay Depp one million dollars. This is significantly less than the amount originally ordered by the court.
According to the agreement, Heard will eventually pay her ex-husband exactly one million dollars in compensation. This amount is significantly lower than the $8.35 million ordered by the court in early June. Heard was ordered to pay $10.35 million to Depp, and Depp $2 million to Heard.
At the time, both parties announced that they would appeal against the judgment.
Following the settlement, Depp’s lawyers say in a press release that the actor will donate the money from Heard to charity. Depp has already stated that “it was never about money”.
Heard states in his press release that he has lost faith in the American justice system, and that the decision to enter into a deal was very difficult.
In the eyes of the public, justice won
In the spring of 2019, Depp sued his ex-wife for an article published in the Washington Post magazine, in which Heard describes her experiences as a victim of intimate partner violence. Depp’s name is not mentioned in the article. The claim for defamation was $50 million.
A little later, Heard countersued her ex-husband for defamation and the compensation claim was 100 million dollars.
The years-long legal battle culminated last spring, when the six-week long Depp v. Amber trial was watched live around the world on online channels and televisions. In the sessions, the ex-couple’s relationship, which continued between 2012 and 2016, was discussed in painful detail.
At the same time, the internet ripped everything possible out of the case. The trial was met with memes and Tiktok videos – mostly mocking Heard and her lawyers, defending Depp.
– Depp has become an anti-hero and Heard is like an evil stepmother who has planned her plot. It has ready-made roles that are already familiar from folk tales, he said.
