Marjaana Varmavuori, 41, is a Helsinki-based journalist. She is currently on family leave from her job at Helsingin Sanomat.

Varmavuori will start work as soon as next week.

The media sector is in a difficult situation, with many professionals out of work. The latest blow has been the historic negotiations on the restructuring of the Finnish Broadcasting Corporation. According to Varmavuori, they will have a major impact on the whole sector.

– In addition to the redundancies, job opportunities are reduced by everyone. Traineeships do not open up for young people in the field. Also, the fixed -term people who have just got their feet in the door are now unemployed.

As chairman of the union, Varmavuori wants to convince politicians that independent Finnish journalism is what is needed now.

– In addition, a media support system at the Nordic level should get this country.

According to Varvuori, one of the most important tasks of the media is to act as a watchdog of power.

Varmavuori is chairman of the Helsinki Region Journalists, a member of the Board of the Journalist Association and chairman of the Association’s Member Committee. He was presented by Journalists of the Helsinki Region.

The new chairman will be in office until the end of next year. Normally, the chairman’s season is four years.
