Tourism is becoming the main source of income for many reindeer farms

Spanish and British charter tourists got to know the Kujala Reindeer Farm in Kuusamo.
Among other things, tourists arriving in Kuusamo from all over Europe on charter flights can feed the reindeer at Kujala Reindeer Farm.

In Kuusamo, Kujala Reindeer Farm’s tourism income grew in two years, outstripping that of meat production.

Increasingly, reindeer herders are earning additional income from tourism. For example, the Kujala Reindeer Farm in Kuusamo has been earning more income from tourism than from reindeer husbandry itself for a couple of years now.

As a source of income, tourism has overtaken meat sales on Kujala’s farm three years ago.

– When we started working on tourism in 2017, already in 2019 tourism income grew more than meat production income.

The reindeer herders have founded the Porotilamatkailu association, which includes about a hundred reindeer herders from the reindeer herding area. The aim of the association is to encourage reindeer herders to engage in tourism.
