The rise in the lake level covers a strip of shoreline about one metre wide.

On Friday, the Regional State Administrative Agencies granted a permit to the South Ostrobothnia Regional Development Centre to change the regulation of Lake Evijärvi. As a result of the decision, the water level will be raised by about ten centimetres.

On Friday, the Regional State Administrative Agency for Western and Central Finland granted a permit to the Finnish Environment Agency to modify the regulation of Lake Evijärvi.

As a result of the change, the upper and lower limits of the lake’s water level regulation will be raised by ten centimetres.

The project will also improve the recreational potential of the lake.

Avi’s decision can be appealed by appealing to the Vaasa Administrative Court. The deadline for receiving complaints is January 23, 2023.

A coastal strip is submerged, hundreds of hectares of fields are flooded

As a result of the rise of the water level, a narrow strip on the beach about a meter wide remains below the water level. In total, approximately 16.2 hectares remain under water.

Avi estimates that raising the water level will cause water damage to about 310 hectares of arable land. Waterlogged and flooded fields will be compensated to the owners. In total, field owners will receive compensation of approximately EUR 252,000 as a lump sum.

Wet fields are located in the area of \u200b\u200b170 different properties. About half of the property owners have given their consent to raising the water level.

There are around 700 properties on the shore of the lake that can be used for permanent and leisure living.

The Ely center’s desire to raise the water level of Evijärvi strongly divided the municipality already in 2018: residents on the shore supported raising the water level, but many farmers and central decision-makers of the municipality opposed it.

The agreement was finally reached in the municipality in autumn 2020.
