Taxi agreement between Finland and Norway eases cross-border traffic – no more raids and fines
The agreement allows for licensed taxi services between countries.
Finland and Norway have negotiated an agreement to allow licensed taxi services across the border.
The authorisation to sign the taxi contract was approved on Thursday by the General Council of State. Once signed, the agreement will be implemented by an Enforcement Act.
The agreement will allow Finnish taxis to transport customers to Norway and Norwegian taxis to Finland.
Finland has not supervised whether the Norwegian taxis also drive on this side of the border. Since summer 2023, the Norwegian authorities have drawn attention to international taxi traffic in Norway. Supervision has been targeted at Finnish taxis.
Several Finnish payments have been fined and banned in the raids. Passengers have been left on the roadside to wait for a Norwegian taxi. The taxi agreement is expected to end.
The new taxi agreement aims to clarify the work, responsibilities and rights of taxi operators and authorities in international taxi traffic.
Supports tourism and local services
– Especially for travelers, this is a major improvement. For example, tourists flying to Tromso or Kirkkoniemi can continue by taxi to Finland and vice versa without extra arrangements, says Autto in a news release from the Coalition Party.
According to Autto, the taxi agreement supports not only tourism but also local services. For example, the movement of those in need of hospital rides is easier.
– Especially in the border of Lapland, smooth taxi traffic is a significant issue. With the agreement, a taxi company can transport passengers from their home state to another Contracting State and return to the pre -order with customers, says Autto.
A similar taxi agreement has already existed between Finland and Sweden.
