It’s freezing – see a video of the amazing caves in the Alps
Caves formed by cold air are rare and short-lived.
Hikers have been enchanted by the ice caves that have formed on the Morteratsch glacier in the Swiss Alps. Caves carved by cold air are rare and short-lived.
Caves are formed when meltwater from glaciers above carves tunnels under the ice. The cavities widen further as warm air blows into them.
Raich is concerned that the glacier could melt due to global warming. And rightly so, because if greenhouse emissions continue to rise, 80% of the Alpine glacier mass will be lost by 2100.
