Neighbours may find singing annoying, even if the volume is lower than normal speech.
A legal dispute has developed over a karaoke song at the Herrasmann campsite in Lahti.
The Lahen Matkailumiehet company has appealed to the Administrative Court against an order of the Lahti Building and Environmental Permit Board requiring the company to submit a noise report for an outdoor karaoke event.
The company does not consider the noise nuisance caused by the singing to be a nuisance and refers in its complaint to the noise measurements taken by the environmental protection inspector. According to these, the noise level from karaoke is below that of normal speech or a passing car.
An amendment to the board’s decision is requested because the demand for a noise report is considered unfounded and unreasonable.
However, last summer Lahti environmental services received several calls about the noise nuisance of karaoke. According to the licensing authorities, the disturbance of noise cannot be assessed solely by measurement results, but is also influenced by the duration of the noise and the time of day.
The city does not have a decibel limit for filing a noise report. Karaoke has been sung at the campsite in the summer on Friday and Saturday evenings between 18:00 and 22:00.
The Building and Environmental Permit Board will give its opinion on the appeal filed with the Vaasa Administrative Court next week.
