The sea eagle is now enjoying the inland waters – in Pirkanmaa, it is possible to thank the deer and deer
The largest winter eagle volumes and stocking populations hit the same areas. This is not a coincidence, says the chairman of the Eagle Working Group.
There are big birds visible far on the ice of Lake Pyhäjärvi. Sea eagles are resting and waiting for better airplanes.
These birds are increasingly visible in the winter in Pirkanmaa. There are more sea eagles on the lakes of Pirkanmaa than anywhere else in Finland in such a small area.
According to birdwatchers, the number of sea eagles in the area has increased for years. In January this year, 142 eagles were already lowered in Pirkanmaa.
Reliable information on the number of eagles in the area has only been obtained since 2022, when they began to be renewed in a new way.
A lot of volunteers are needed for calculation. Paulaniemi wants to thank the enthusiastic birdwatchers.
Dead deer and deer for eagle food
However, the fact that sea eagles overwinter so much, especially in Pirkanmaa and Kanta-Häme, is largely the result of the growth of deer and deer populations.
Eagles that are long distances in the air are easily found by the furry animals killed by human activity or beasts.
In such mild winters, the sea eagle can do with little food. The opposite is hard in the freezing winter, when a large amount of eagle needs other food besides fish. Then the deer and the deer end up as eagle food.
The great victory of nature conservation
The number of inland nesting wintering has no direct effect. Much of the wintering Kotk moves to the Arctic Ocean.
The spread of nesting inland is slow. For example, no nesting sailors are known on the shores of Lake Näsijärvi.
– The sea eagle may move in a large area, but will be happy to return to nesting close to her own birthplace after your youth, says Heikki Lokki.
The first nesting of Pirkanmaa was confirmed in the early 2000s. Last year there were 12 nesting sites.
In the summer of 2024, the nesting of the eagle was confirmed in the last province of Finland, South Savo.
– Yes, this is incredible, commented sea eagles Heikki Lokki.
The seagull remembers the time when the sea eagle was called a flying hazardous waste.
– In 1973, the WWF Sea Eagle Working Group was founded to document the disappearance of the eagle on the Finnish bird’s eagle. There was hardly any hope, Lokki says.
The last sea eagles tried to nest far away from the reach of the predator. Nor did it protect the toxins.
Regular feeding and cleaning of the Baltic Sea yielded a result that few believed. The survival and proliferation of the eagle can be considered one of the greatest achievements of Finnish nature conservation. Now the position is classified as viable.
Eagle remembers the treatment of his species
Although sea eagles are still quite close to human settlement, many have not seen any more bird.
Eagles spend their time on the back of the lakes, where the gaze is not on the beach without the telescope above.
\”Individual eagles move close to a person, but it takes a long time for a sea eagle to trust a person,\” says Lokki.
The confident individuals from the eagle have disappeared and the descendants of careful are remaining.
During the winter, sea eagles are recognized by fishermen moving on ice, who receive unacceptable fish to eat. Perhaps this is the beginning of a new kind of cohabitation.
