Lahti wants to clean the walls of abandoned houses awaiting demolition permits from dirt – the job would cost up to 20,000 euros
The city’s building control wants to keep the walls of the old fire station clean, because the buildings have not yet received a demolition permit.
Lahti Building Supervision wants to clean the walls of the old fire station buildings from the walls of the buildings, even though it has already been decided to demolish the buildings once. It is estimated that the contract would pay tens of thousands of euros.
Now there is a special dispute in the city between the building control and the spatial center. Lahti Tilakeskus would like to save money, but the city’s building inspection requires the removal of blemishes in the name of equality. The city requires cleanliness from all property owners. The neighbors have also complained about the bumps.
Two wall paintings were made with permission
With a permit, murals were painted on vacant houses in the fall of 2023. The idea was that the temporary paintings would be removed when the buildings were demolished. In addition to authorized paintings, the walls of the building have been scratched. They have also been vandalized.
At the end of last year, Lahti Tilakeskus applied to the city for permission to allow the graffiti to remain on the walls until the final fate of the buildings is known. This would avoid unnecessary work and costs.
The farm center’s request for the temporary preservation of Graffiti was denied by decision of the official, so the farm center now requires its rectification.
– The city’s savings plans are generally known. They try to pinch everything possible, he points out.
The neighbors have complained
The Building and Environment Board will receive an appeal on Tuesday 28 January. It is proposed to the panel that the rectification claim is rejected, which means that the graffiti should be removed.
In addition, it is presented to the board that the deadline for removal is three months from the decision. The neighbor of the plot has demanded that the deadline be set.
Neighbors have been under construction supervision in the city since the summer of 2024 and demanded that paintings be removed.
Patrikainen points out that the authorized paintings on the walls were meant to be temporary. Their quality has suffered, and they no longer enhance the cityscape. The city also cannot know how long the buildings and murals will remain in place.
Zoning is still in progress
The two poor buildings on the plot on Möysänkatu 5 have not yet been granted a demolition permit, as the Häme ELY Center and the Lahti Museums have required a building history survey.
The starting point for the planning of the plot was that both buildings would be demolished and new to replace. However, according to a building history study, we now also have to consider the option that buildings are proposed to be preserved at least in part.
– We should not make a formula that builders or potential property buyers have no interest. So I probably have to do this kind of sensation in the design, says Lehmuskoski.
