Kuhmo’s Finno-Ugric cultural capital year is approaching. Last year, Kuhmo was chosen as the Finnish-Ugric cultural capital of 2023. This is the first time that the selection targeted Finland.

In Kuhmo, preparations are nearing completion. During the cultural capital year, more than 100 opportunities or events are organized in the city, which aim especially to support and preserve Finno-Ugric languages \u200b\u200band cultures.

The opening of the jubilee year will be organized on February 24, 2023 in two parts. All Kuhmo schoolchildren and international guests will participate in the day event. The program includes, among other things, a playful skiing competition between Finno-Ugric nationalities and a snow sculpture exhibition. In the evening, at the Kuhmo house, the program continues in the form of cultural exhibitions, a music program and greetings.

The music festival Sommelo is the main event of the jubilee year, which lasts a whole week in June-July. Other events include Kuhmo’s Winter in February and Kuhmo’s Chamber Music in July, both of which feature a Finno-Ugric theme.

In Kuhmo, it is expected that the status of cultural capital will promote cultural tourism in the region.
