The side stone from Yara’s Siilinjärvi mine may end up in land construction in the future.

The municipality of Siilinjärvi plans to enter into an agreement with Yara on the utilization of side stone. The idea is to use the side stone produced at the mine, for example, in the pre-construction of business plots.

Siilinjärvi municipality is willing to buy from Yara the side stone produced at its Siilinjärvi mine.

The municipality intends to enter into a cooperation agreement with Yara, under which it would use the side stone purchased from Yara in the pre-construction of commercial plots. It would also be possible to use side stone in municipal engineering sites.

According to research, the stone is suitable for use in earthworks. By utilizing side stone, it is possible to reduce the use of virgin soil.

– In a circular economy, all pre-construction material is used, on which, for example, halls or other buildings according to business needs can be built.

The municipality strives to increase the use of natural stone

Turunen believes that the agreement with Yara would make it possible to increase the use of natural aggregate in the municipality’s facilities.

– When the stone is natural stone, we don’t need to dig it out of the ground ourselves, when we can reasonably get it from the neighbor.

The Siilinjärvi municipal government will discuss the cooperation agreement at its meeting on Monday.
