The amount of compensation for damage caused by large carnivores shrank slightly last year

Damage caused by bears to crops, harvests and bees, among other things, was estimated to cost more than €100 000 in North Karelia last year.

In North Karelia, the amount of compensation for damage caused by large predators last year was slightly lower than the previous year, even though the amount of damage was larger.

In particular, the number of dog injuries caused by lynxes decreased last year in North Karelia. According to the Riistadaktet.fi service, there were 14 dog injuries last year, 11 of which were caused by wolves. In 2023, there were 20 of them, 12 of which were caused by wolves and six by lynxes.

Bears cause the most damage to agriculture and bee farms. The amount of compensation for damage caused by bears also decreased slightly from the previous year.
