In the summer of 2023, the Power Cup, i.e. the world's largest volleyball tournament for children and youth, was organized in Ukonniemi, Imatra.
The City of Imatra hopes that the development of Haapasaari will be linked to the development of the entire Saimaa-Ukonniemi area. Photo from the Power Cup held in Imatra Ukonniemi in summer 2023.

The South Karelia Recreation Area Foundation and the City of Imatra are starting to develop Hapasaari together.

Haapasaari, located in Imatra, is transferred to the South Karelia Recreation Area Foundation. At the same time, the recreational area foundation will receive its first area in Imatra free of charge.

The city council, which decided on the matter yesterday, wants to see the lease agreement with the recreation area foundation before it is signed.

The areas of the Recreation Area Foundation are for the use of residents and tourists. Tourism and leisure activities are to be developed in Hapasaari. This would also strengthen the development of the whole Saimaa-Ukonniemi area.

Haapasaari is located north of Lammassaari in Imatra, Saimaa. Access to Haapasaari must be developed so that it serves, for example, users of the Ukonniemi trail network.

The South Karelia recreation area foundation hopes that island hiking could become a new nature tourism product in the province. The city hopes that boaters will find Haapasaari.

Popular camping spots for the people of Imatra are, for example, Satamosaari in Lappeenranta and Huuhanranta in Ruokolahti.
